Elegant Alloy Restaurant Wedding in Calgary

I’m so excited to finally share some images from Kylan and Jordan’s Alloy Restaurant wedding in Calgary. had We absolutely loved being a part of this day! It was a journey to say the least!!  So many laughs, so much love, a few unexpected changes, a lot of rain and a ceremony venue change … ahem … half way through the ceremony! These guys are absolute champions and handled everything like a boss.

The morning started at Jordan’s parents place where their backyard was getting prepped for their backyard ceremony. While this was happening the the bride and groom were getting ready. Side note – Jordan is half Aussie, so on top of being from one of the greatest countries in the world his family was so welcoming having all of their guests hosted in their home. After their first look we headed out to some blooming Canola fields for photos and also dodged a car or two on the highway – totally worth it.

As guests started to arrive the clouds started to look a little darker and as the bride was walking down the patio steps it started sprinkling. I really appreciate their determination to keep going through the rain and it wasn’t until some of the AV equipment cut out that we all started to head inside.

After drying off (these are some of my favourite images from the day), we started the ceremony inside and obviously after that much effort and transition the sun decided to come out – of course.

So we switched a few things up and made the most of the dry skies for the rest of our picture time. We then headed to Alloy restaurant for their wedding reception. I absolutely love that Kylan and JD chose the place where they shared their first date as the venue for where they would share their first meal as Mr + Mrs – I absolutely love when couples put sentimental thought behind their wedding details! We laughed most of the night, heard a few embarrassing stories, ate incredible food and witnessed some outstanding dance moves.  Thanks again for having us Kylan and JD – this alloy restaurant wedding is one we’ll never forget!

Planning a wedding in Calgary? We shoot alot in the mountains but also love being a part of weddings here in the city – you can check out another wedding that we shot at The Hudson HERE.

The Hudson Calgary Downtown Wedding // Dylan + Alyssa

Alyssa + Dylan were married 2 months ago and chose to have their beautiful Downtown Calgary wedding at the Plaza Theatre for their ceremony followed by a reception at The Hudson Calgary. It was an absolutely beautiful day, and amidst a week of full rain the clouds parted and made way for gorgeous, sunny skies! Their day was full of so much love and joy. You don’t need to scroll through these images for long before you can see how infectious Alyssa’s smile is and how full of laughter their day was.
+
After much laughter during their getting ready shots we headed to Riley Park for their first look and then straight to Plaza Theatre. Guests munched away on popcorn and watched a short movie of Dylan + Alyssa’s love story which had people in the crowd (and maybe me) with a tear in our eyes – I’m not crying YOU’RE crying!
+
Make sure you keep scrolling to see images of some moments from their day that I’ll never forget, including:
+
1. Dylan’s champagne explosion while the bridal party shared a bottle
2. The two MC’s dressing up half way through the reception
3. A ceremonial ‘wedding planning torch’ getting passed on to another couple
4. Dylan + Alyssa getting wrapped up with streamers during their first dance.
+
Every part of their day was so elegantly styled Alyssa had put so much thought in to little details which made this day so beautiful. If you’re considering The Husdon Calgary for your wedding or a Plaza Theatre Wedding I can’t recommend either of these venues higher! Congrats again Dylan + Alyssa d thanks so much for letting us hang out with you cool cats for the day!

Mexico Destination Wedding Photographer // Darren + Rachel

Since moving our business to Calgary, we’ve been fortunate enough to work as a Mexico Destination Wedding photographer and its high time I finally share one of them. So finally, here is Darren + Rachel’s Riu Palace Riviera Maya wedding wedding that we captured last October!

It’s no secret that a perk of being a wedding photographer here in Calgary is the opportunity to capture a wedding in Mexico. I had no idea when I first arrived just how many people go to Mexico. I never knew how fantastic an all inclusive resort is – I had never been to one until moving here. It’s something that I’ve dreamt of for a very long time and I’m so thankful for all of our couples that have trusted us to capture their mexico wedding. Shooting weddings in the heat and on the beach is where I first got my start in weddings. Every time we get to shoot a hot beachy wedding it reminds me of Australia, which makes me super happy!

Darren and Rachel are two incredibly kind souls who dated when they were younger and after reconnecting years later, fell in love and welcomed us into their group of family and friends for their destination wedding. I’m SUCH a big fan of destination weddings – and not just because we get to come along – but Joe and I say all the time that if we could do it all over again we would have chosen to do a destination wedding. Rachel made her own bouquet which has some of the cutest ocean details, her 1920’s style hair peice and vintage jewelry just finished her look off perfectly. After doing a first look we made the most of the incredibly ornate and beautiful hotel foyer and building. We absolutely loved the resort and the architecture! Thanks again Rachel and Darren for having us! It was such a fantastic time #classiczabka (just one of the several inside jokes of the week!).

Calgary Indian Wedding Photography // Nikita + Aaron

Welcome to the world of Calgary Indian Wedding Photography with Aaron + Nikita’s amazing wedding! Aaron + Nikita’s wedding has been one of our favourite weddings we have  ever captured. Spoiler alert, there is ALOT of photos in this post. I spent days getting the photos curated down to this many – when I started picking images for this post there was about 5 times more than what you’ll see below. The great thing about photographing a mutli-day wedding is that the celebrations last for days, and each day is so beautiful in its traditions and events that there is just so much love and joy throughout all the photos so its pretty hard to not want to share all of that.

One thing I love about being a Calgary wedding photographer is that there are so many different cultural weddings that we have had the privilege of capturing.  I absolutely loved how during this Calgary Indian wedding photography the celebration wasn’t just one day but over 5 days. By the end of the week we were all so sad to not be spending any more days together.

I am such a strong believer in marriage and most western weddings are just the one day which is also wonderful but so much planning goes into the one day it can feel like the moment can easily slip you by. I totally remember feeling this way during my own wedding. So I just love how by the end of the week it is such a great celebration not only of the day but also in the preparations that you definitely feel the weight of how wonderful this wedding is.

Anyway, I could go on and on because I just loved every part of this wedding. Aaron + Nikita are just two of the most fun loving, joyful and loving people around. It was such a privilege spending the week with these two and their incredible families. AND the food .. holy moly the food, if I could eat Indian food all day every day I’d be a happy chappy. Thanks so much for having us Aaron + Nikita!

Island Lake Lodge Wedding, Fernie, BC // Jake + Krystal

I’m so excited to finally share Jake + Krystal’s beautiful Island Lake Lodge Wedding in Fernie, BC. This wedding was one of our highlights of the 2018 wedding season. From the majestic mountain views, to the laughs we shared getting know Jake + Krystal’s nearest and dearest, to all the genuine love and emotion, every part of this wedding was out of a dream.

Since Jake + Krystal reside in Chicago we initially chatted over FaceTime about their wedding and instantly loved what they had planned and their relaxed approach to their day. We were pretty surprised we hadn’t ever come across the Island Lake Lodge in Fernie. With friends and family in the area we are in Fernie all the time, we have camped there countless times and thought we knew most of the tucked away gems the area has to offer.

When we did our location scout before their wedding, we were totally shocked by the rain forest vibes you get as you drive through the 800 year old cedar forest to get to the lodge. It’s completely hidden and tucked away in the wilderness with insanely beautiful views of the rocky mountains. If you’re wedding venue hunting and looking for a venue with mountain views, accommodation for your guests and gourmet cuisine, the Island Lake Lodge is amazing.

The entire day was so full of love and laughs … and games, cards, chess, croquet … An intense round of cards even broke out on the dance floor. Thanks so much for having us Jake + Krystal!

Calgary Engagement Session // Juliette + Jene

One of my favourite sessions to date would have to be Juliette and Jeans’s Calgary engagement session. Super stripped down, super simple I could do sessions like this Every. Dam. Day.

So if I’m being honest I have a confession, Juliette and Jean didn’t inquire for an engagement session, I totally stalked them on Instagram and we met while I was in Victoria, BC for a photography conference. I promise I’m not a full time stalker but any time I’m in a new city I’ll always have a quick check on insta to see if there are any couples that may want some pretty photos. Fortunately for me, Juliette and Jean were keen. We met in my hotel room, I really wanted to experiment with a more intimate style of couple photography before hitting the beach. It’s been too long since I had photographed people on a beach.

Jean and Juliette were so keen for anything that I suggested. It’s always amazing when a couple has total trust in what you do, in my opinion this is when magic happens.

I’m always telling my couples that a great idea for your engagement session is to completely mix it up from what your wedding pictures will look like. Variety is great. For example, if you are getting married in the mountains then a more urban setting could be great for your engagement session. If you’re getting married in the winter then a summer session could be fun. Something I’ve yet to get fully into is in-home sessions. I think it’s because I’m such an outdoor person, and also because the mountains are so close. Seriously, mountains … I get it, I always want to in them, on them, doing stuff with them, its weird how much I love them but there is just something so lovely about two people, in a home, feeling comfortable feeling like its their happy place with the one that makes them happy.

Our renos are almost done, well enough to be photographable and as soon as they are then I’ll be offering home session at our place. Our whole house will become a home studio so if you’re thinking your place won’t be great .. I got you boo!

Eating and Watering Holes

n
So more just for fun, I thought I would list some our favourite places to eat. We often get asked by our out of town couples if we know of any good places around the area. I am definitely a foodie!! Joe is pretty happy no matter what is put in front of him but I’m a food snob and I love things I’ve never tried and experimental flavours so if this sounds like something you’re into then here are some of our favourite places to eat and drink.

Ten Foot Henrys – the blown feta and tomatoes is mind blowing

Model Milk – best burger ever (big call I know), also Calamari is incredible

The Himalayan – if you like Nepalese food this is for you

Where The Buffalo Roam – This little nook is in Canmore and it has the best cocktail ever – The Mexican Mule is amazing!!

The Crazy Weed – Also in Canmore and is amazing

Hope this list is helpful, any other questions just let me know or you can head home by clicking THIS!

Calgary Forest Engagement Session, AB // Robyn + Curt

I’m constantly on the hunt for cool places and different environments and to shoot at. Finding a gem of a location always give this jolt of creativity and since I’m not a Calgary native its such a fun reason to explore the surrounding areas. Early last spring we were were on our way back from the mountains and the highway was shutdown so we decided to dogleg all our way home. This was when we stumbled upon Big Hill Springs Provincial Park. If you’ve ever wanted your engagement session to look like you’re in Jurassic Park then this is the place to head. It is this incredible mix of foothills, waterfalls, beautiful greenery and fields. Seriously, such an amazing place for a wild and forest engagement session.

On the drive out the park for Robyn and Curts session it started to rain a little which you know, no big deal. By the time we met in the car park it was pouring with rain and there was lightning all over the sky. We thought we would give it 5 mins and then it started hailing. Now I’m up for shooting in any kind of weather (especially when we could potentially get a lightening shot!). I’m totally game no matter what the conditions but I think a golfball sized hail stone to the head won’t be fun for anyone, so we decided to reschedule. By the time we found another date the rain just magically stopped and then we had the most beautiful night for photos .. seriously Calgary weather?!

It just goes to show for all the engaged couples out there that even if the weather doesn’t look great for your session rescheduling isn’t always the best option. Weather here can move so quickly that even when it decides to hail it can still turn out to be the most beautiful light for session. Robyn and Curt were so amazing and so fun to work with! I think their photos are just a reflection of how much love and fun they share .. enjoy!

If you’re wondering if a mountain engagement session may be the way to go you can get out Ben and Biana’s session here!

Need to get home and can’t be bothered scrolling up .. don’t worry I won’t judge, you can just click THIS to get home.

Moraine Lake + Lake Louise Elopement, AB // Jake + Bella

One of my resolutions for the new year was to blog more (wondering if by announcing it to the web it may give me enough accountability to actually follow through). I’ve been scrolling through so many of our weddings from last year and I realized just how much I’m still yet to share. So its week two of 2019 and this is the second wedding I’m blogging this year (YES!! … let’s see how long this lasts!).

September in 2018 was one of the chilliest I’ve ever experiences here in Canada. I know that mountains bring all sorts of cray cray weather but still, this September was unusually cold. When we headed out to capture Bella and Jake’s elopement, we were a little worried for what conditions we were headed into. I’m always so impressed by our brave brides who stand in slinky or strapless dresses in negative temperatures while their faces are half freezing. It was chilly for sure but there was this total stillness and calmness that made the lakes unbelievable.

Bella and Jake are two lovely souls from the Isle of Wight in the UK and instead of a formal wedding back home they opted for an adventure of a lifetime and travelled around Canada for 3 weeks for their elopement.

We met them at Moraine Lake Lodge for some getting ready shots where it was lightly snowing and then headed to Lake Louise for their first look, reading of some beautiful love letters and then their ceremony. Bella and Jake had put so much effort into all the details, a dress to die for, wild and untamed flowers – Bella even made her own flower crown. Everything was just amazing.

After the formalities wrapped up we headed back to Moraine Lake for a canoe ride and some shots at the lookout. While there was a chill in the air, everything was so still which made the most amazing reflection on the water and every part of our time together was absolutely magical. To top things off we even saw a Moose! It was the closest I’ve ever been to a moose (you may find a pic of her below).

It was an absolutely pleasure spending the day with Bella and Jake and their love flowed over in every moment. We are pretty bummed they live so far away because Joe and I were planning to awkwardly force our friendship on them.  Thanks again so much for having us!

River Spirit Golf Club Wedding, AB // Curt + Robyn

Now that 2019 has kicked I’m blogging like a mad woman, beginning with Robyn + Curt’s Calgary Golf Club wedding. We captured so many beautiful weddings that it’s time to get some blog posts up! Back in September we had the pleasure of documenting the insanely beautiful Calgary Wedding at the River Spirit Golf Club for Curt and Robyn.

Robyn (an uber talented hair stylist and just wonderful gal) met Curt while he was home visiting from the military. Shortly after meeting they fell in love and after doing the long distance thang, they decided to get hitched in Calgary. They planned their wedding for September and in classic Calgary style some unforeseen snow turned their fall wedding into a snowy, fall-ish, chilly, magical bonanza. Thanks so much Curt and Robyn for sucking it up in the cold for us!!

After a beautiful first look at the golf course, their closest friends braved some chills for pictures and then we headed back to their moving ceremony. The reception kicked off with a twist and instead of a first dance Robyn and Curt performed a duet (hello music superstars!). This was only the beginning as members of each table had to perform songs to win places for the buffet table and the night finished with some electric dance moves.

One thing we love about Robyn and Curt’s Calgary wedding is how fun and romantic it was … every part of their day was filled with so much joy and laughter. Their reception felt like a big family dinner and their love was so evident in each part of their day. Thanks so much for having us guys!!
