Vendors We Love!

For most couples once their venue and photographer are booked, things slow down a little on the planning. Photographers are usually one of the first vendors to get locked in so we are often getting asked for recommendations of other best wedding vendors. We’ve been fortunate enough to work with some amazing wedding professionals in Calgary and also the surrounding areas. Here are a few that we love! This list is constantly being updated so any other recommendations or vendors that we have worked with and you’re not seeing yourself on this list please let me know!

Eating and Watering Holes

n
So more just for fun, I thought I would list some our favourite places to eat. We often get asked by our out of town couples if we know of any good places around the area. I am definitely a foodie!! Joe is pretty happy no matter what is put in front of him but I’m a food snob and I love things I’ve never tried and experimental flavours so if this sounds like something you’re into then here are some of our favourite places to eat and drink.

Ten Foot Henrys – the blown feta and tomatoes is mind blowing

Model Milk – best burger ever (big call I know), also Calamari is incredible

The Himalayan – if you like Nepalese food this is for you

Where The Buffalo Roam – This little nook is in Canmore and it has the best cocktail ever – The Mexican Mule is amazing!!

The Crazy Weed – Also in Canmore and is amazing

Hope this list is helpful, any other questions just let me know or you can head home by clicking THIS!

Calgary Forest Engagement Session, AB // Robyn + Curt

Curt and Robyn’s Calgary forest engagement session is one that felt more like having fun than work! We all had so much fun exploring this beautiful park. I’m constantly on the hunt for cool places and different environments and to shoot at. Finding a gem of a location always give this jolt of creativity and since I’m not a Calgary native its such a fun reason to explore the surrounding areas. Early last spring we were were on our way back from the mountains and the highway was shutdown so we decided to dogleg all our way home. This was when we stumbled upon Big Hill Springs Provincial Park. If you’ve ever wanted your engagement session to look like you’re in Jurassic Park then this is the place to head. It is this incredible mix of foothills, waterfalls, beautiful greenery and fields. Seriously, such an amazing place for a wild and forest engagement session.

On the drive out for Robyn and Curts Calgary forest engagement session it started to rain a little which you know, no big deal. By the time we met in the car park it was pouring with rain and there was lightning all over the sky. We thought we would give it 5 mins and then it started hailing. Now I’m up for shooting in any kind of weather (especially when we could potentially get a lightening shot!). I’m totally game no matter what the conditions but I think a golfball sized hail stone to the head won’t be fun for anyone, so we decided to reschedule. By the time we found another date the rain just magically stopped and then we had the most beautiful night for photos .. seriously Calgary weather?!

It just goes to show for all the engaged couples out there that even if the weather doesn’t look great for your session rescheduling isn’t always the best option. Weather here can move so quickly that even when it decides to hail it can still turn out to be the most beautiful light for session. Robyn and Curt were so amazing and so fun to work with! I think their photos are just a reflection of how much love and fun they share .. enjoy!

If you’re wondering if a mountain engagement session may be the way to go you can get out Ben and Biana’s session here!

Need to get home and can’t be bothered scrolling up .. don’t worry I won’t judge, you can just click THIS to get home.

Moraine Lake + Lake Louise Elopement, AB // Jake + Bella

One of my resolutions for the new year was to blog more (wondering if by announcing it to the web it may give me enough accountability to actually follow through), so I’m starting with Jake and Bella’s magical Moraine Lake and Lake Louise Elopement. I’ve been scrolling through so many of our weddings from last year and I realized just how much I’m still yet to share. So its week two of 2019 and this is the second wedding I’m blogging this year (YES!! … let’s see how long this lasts!).

September in 2018 was one of the chilliest I’ve ever experiences here in Canada. I know that mountains bring all sorts of cray cray weather but still, this September was unusually cold. When we headed out to capture Bella and Jake’s Lake Louise elopement, we were a little worried for what conditions we were headed into. I’m always so impressed by our brave brides who stand in slinky or strapless dresses in negative temperatures while their faces are half freezing. It was chilly for sure but there was this total stillness and calmness that made the lakes unbelievable.

Bella and Jake are two lovely souls from the Isle of Wight in the UK and instead of a formal wedding back home they opted for an adventure of a lifetime and travelled around Canada for 3 weeks for their Lake Louise elopement.

Coverage of this beautiful Lake Louise Elopement started at Moraine Lake Lodge for some getting ready shots where it was lightly snowing and then headed to Lake Louise for their first look, reading of some beautiful love letters and then their ceremony. Bella and Jake had put so much effort into all the details, a dress to die for, wild and untamed flowers – Bella even made her own flower crown. Everything was just amazing.

After the formalities wrapped up we headed back to Moraine Lake for a canoe ride and some shots at the lookout. While there was a chill in the air, everything was so still which made the most amazing reflection on the water and every part of our time together was absolutely magical. To top things off we even saw a Moose! It was the closest I’ve ever been to a moose (you may find a pic of her below).

It was an absolutely pleasure spending the day with Bella and Jake for their Lake Louise elopement and their love flowed over in every moment. We are pretty bummed they live so far away because Joe and I were planning to awkwardly force our friendship on them.  Thanks again so much for having us!

River Spirit Golf Club Wedding, AB // Curt + Robyn

Now that 2019 has kicked I’m blogging like a mad woman, beginning with Robyn + Curt’s Calgary Golf Club wedding. We captured so many beautiful weddings that it’s time to get some blog posts up! Back in September we had the pleasure of documenting the insanely beautiful Calgary Wedding at the River Spirit Golf Club for Curt and Robyn.

Robyn (an uber talented hair stylist and just wonderful gal) met Curt while he was home visiting from the military. Shortly after meeting they fell in love and after doing the long distance thang, they decided to get hitched in Calgary. They planned their wedding for September and in classic Calgary style some unforeseen snow turned their fall wedding into a snowy, fall-ish, chilly, magical bonanza. Thanks so much Curt and Robyn for sucking it up in the cold for us!!

After a beautiful first look at the golf course, their closest friends braved some chills for pictures and then we headed back to their moving ceremony. The reception kicked off with a twist and instead of a first dance Robyn and Curt performed a duet (hello music superstars!). This was only the beginning as members of each table had to perform songs to win places for the buffet table and the night finished with some electric dance moves.

One thing we love about Robyn and Curt’s Calgary wedding is how fun and romantic it was … every part of their day was filled with so much joy and laughter. Their reception felt like a big family dinner and their love was so evident in each part of their day. Thanks so much for having us guys!!

Summer Willow Lane Barn Wedding, AB // Brandon + Stephanie

I’m so excited to share Steph and Brandon’s summer Willow Lane Barn wedding. This wedding was so exciting for us for several reasons. Firstly, we got to shoot in a Canola field! We’ve been wanting to shoot in a canola field for so long but since canola only flowers for 2 weeks that makes it tricky. It is also tricky to shoot a wedding in a location that’s close enough to a canola field. These two factors combined can make our goal that is originally a tricky extremely tricky so safe to say we have been waiting for a long time!

I was so excited when I did my location scout that a flowering canola field was right next door. If you’re planning a wedding with a rustic barn styled venue, the willow lane barn is so fantastic! I would definitely recommend booking a wedding for the last two weekends in July if you want some canola fields. Ok, I’ll move on from the fields! If you’re after a willow lane barn wedding then you’re up for about an hours drive from Calgary, about 1.5 hours if you’re driving from the SE. You have the option of accommodation near by or organizing shuttles for your guests.

Brandon and Stephanie’s day was pretty much perfect. From a photography point of view Brandon and Steph were the ideal clients, so much fun to be with, the best friends and family to spend the day with etc, etc. They were also so amped for any ideas that we had and they really gave so much time for photography during the day. We were able to sneak out of the reception to capture some beautiful sunset shots. Then they were also keen when asked if we could pop out again for a night shot. Thanks so much for having us guys and we hope you enjoy some wedding inspiration for your barn wedding!

Provost Farm Wedding, AB // Karla + Justin

We recently had the privilege of travelling to Provost to photograph Justin and Karla’s beautiful Provost farm wedding.  Neither Joe or I had been to Provost before and to be perfectly honest there wasn’t much expectation other than just your average farm town … what we found was some VERY cool architecture, a beautiful lake and a families that we now feel a part of. I loved it so much Joe and I went back and captured a few shots. I posted on our insta which you can check out here. We headed to Provost on our way back from Joe’s parents farm in Manitoba. It was a little out of the way for us but we love so much that being a wedding photographer means we can get to places that we would have never otherwise had the opportunity to visit. Its such a privilege getting to photograph weddings all over Alberta and Canada.

We pulled into Provost the day before the wedding and what was meant to be a quick meet and greet at Karla’s parents place ended up being an invitation to stay, eat and mingle as if we were one of their own. It was so lovely!

Once we captured some getting ready shots we headed out to the lake for a pictures which was so beautiful, we definitely have found a new summer camping spot! Their ceremony was at a family farm which was decorated with a lovely mix of vintage pieces and classic, elegant decorations.  We made use of family owned property to photograph some flowering fields and then it was time to celebrate the night away.  Every part of the day was so filled with love and emotion it was such a pleasure to photograph their elegant farm wedding. Congrats again Justing and Karla!

Norquay Winter Wedding // Banff, AB

I am so excited to blog about Chris + Ivy’s Norquay Winter Wedding.  Two genuine and adventure-loving humans, had one of our most favourite weddings we have ever been a part of. Set in Banff, it included men in army formals (ladies am I right?!), chair lift rides, FOUR beautiful flower girls, toy gun shenanigans and finished off with a wedding dress slashing so the bride could dance properly. Busting intense dance moves are are one thing, cutting up your wedding dress for intense dance moves are a whole new league.

We maximized the short amount of daylight with a first look and then headed straight up the Norquay chairlift to capture some incredible views of the mountains. The snow had been pretty non existent so we were so happy that there was snow at the top of the chair lift! I’m always so impressed with winter bridal parties and their willingness to brave the cold – these guys were no exception! They trudged through snow, climbed over rocks, took off layers and all with a smile on their face (being the photographer we definitely get it easy as we bundle up!)

Their ceremony and reception were so full of emotion and love, it was such a pleasure to be a part of! Check out the pictures of Ivy when she gathered her bridal party to assist in cutting off the train of her wedding dress so she could bust a move … Any outfit adjustment (no matter how major) in the name of dance is totally worth it in my books! Ivy definitely takes the crown for hardcore bride. This wedding definitely takes the crown for our favourite Norquay Winter Wedding.

Congrats Ivy + Chris and thanks again so much for having us!

Banff Engagement Photos, AB // Kyle + Pegah

Super stoked to share Kyle + Pegah’s Banff Engagement Photos on the blog! When Kyle + Pegah first contact me to do their engagement photos, in Banff, in April I was a little concerned how the weather would be and if this session would even be possible. I was completely blown away by how the crazy weather worked in our favour to create some of the coolest photos we’ve ever taken. If you’re ever worried about your weather on your wedding day this is a perfect example of how great it the photos can be if you do!This session was so incredible! It made me fall in love with Banff all over again and fall in love with living in Canada all over again.

Being Australian where the weather is warm and sunny about 90% of the time I am always so surprised by the crazy weather here and just how quickly it moves. While we were taking these Banff engagement photos the weather put on such a display and made me almost wish for crazy weather with every session that we do!

We started off meeting at Johnson Lake where we strolled through the forest and kept a look out for bears .. I’m still such a freak when it comes to thinking that a bear will be in every forest I walk into! The pictures looks lovey and breezy but I assure you there was such a chill in the wind and Kyle and Pegah were such champions for braving the cold – especially Pegah in her short dress!!

It started snowing on us while we were at Johnson Lake so once we had taken a few shots in the snowfall we headed back to the other side of town to Tunnel Mountain Reservoir.

Its one of my favourite places in Banff to take photos with completely unobstructed views of the mountains and so much variety at the one location. We even got to see some deer which is always a treat!

The heavens opened up and it started to snow again but this time the sun was out as well and it just made for photo magic! If only it could snow every time I headed into Banff for engagement photos!!

Thanks Pegah + Kyle for such a fun day inviting me to capture your relationship and shoot your engagement photos in Banff. I’m so happy for you two! Exploring Johnson Lake and Tunnel Mountain Meadow was just so much fun!

If you would like any further info on visiting the Banff National Park please check out their website here.

You can check out an elopement in some other spots in the Banff National Park at Bella and Jake’s Moraine Lake Elopement here.

Intimate Couples Session, Victoria, BC // Jordan + Michael

I just got back from spending a few days in Victoria I couldn’t wait to blog this Calgary in-home engagement session. and was such an amazing experience. I went to Victoria to attend an incredible workshop where we and collaborated with local vendors on several sessions and styled shoots which will all be on the blog soon! I even took some time out and worked with a wonderful couple on my hotel room – you can check that session out very soon!

On top of getting so inspired we took some time and played around with a couples boudoir session which was so much fun!! I’ve been wanting to do more in home engagement sessions, I think its tricky because the mountains are so close so even if our wedding is in Calgary so often we are heading to the mountains for couple and engagement sessions. Most of the engagement sessions I shoot are out in the mountains so this was such a different style for me and I loved the intimate and relaxed feel of this engagement session. I can’t wait to start shooting more of this type of session, soooo, I am so excited to announce that come whenever our renovations are done .. I’m thinking when wedding season slows down, I will be offering couples boudoir sessions out of our home in NW Calgary, YAAASS!

We have spent so much time renovating and getting our place ready so we have several spaces that will be perfect for this type of session. If you’re wanting a more relaxed and intimate engagement session then this will be for you. These photos were taken from my first in home engagement session and I’m so excited to do more of these!

For any more info on doing a session like this please drop us a line via email, phone or the contact form. Enjoy!

All little more info our wedding photography style.

Describing our photography style has never come to easily to me. Firstly, I’m not the best at words in general .. I’m someone that could quite easily communicate in emojis alone. I have a hard time using proper English at the best of times so it goes without saying that I often like my images to speak for themselves. Each image should evoke a certain feeling within you and you should be able to remember the happiness and overwhelming set of emotions you felt on your wedding day.

With a photojournalistic perspective we capture candid moments throughout the majority of your wedding day, but also highly encourage portraits of you as a couple and family portraits for posterity. We love each element of a wedding, from the smallest piece of jewelry to the biggest, most confetti-filled party moments, we love to share it all with you (especially the ugly cry faces). We incorporate all of the pieces to create a linear story of your wedding day for your final portfolio of images.

Wedding Planning Resources

It can be so overwhelming starting to plan your wedding … I’ve always got such a special place in my heard for newly engaged couples – Joe and I planned our wedding in Australia from Canada so, so long ago so I know first hand how intense the whole process can be. For most couples booking their venue and then their photographer are the first two things they do. Because we are usually one of the first cogs in the wedding planning wheel we are often asked so many questions regarding day of planning and recommended vendors so I decided to put some info for all you lovely people!

First things first, from the amount of weddings that we’ve been to (we lost count after 100) it seems that there really are no rules any more. We’ve seen so many different approaches to weddings and day of schedules that my best recommendation is for you guys is to just do you. Let your day be a true reflection of who you guys are and your love story. There are few things that we love to help with – especially things that can help you guys maximize our time you so you get the most of out of your photos. After your day is done they are the biggest reminder of one of the most special days of your lives. The first of these is our knowledge of light.
++

++

Light and Photography

Light is often one of the least considered pieces in wedding day planning, but it matters more than you would think for the sake of not only your wedding photography but also the comfort of your guests and your general timeline of events.

Mid-day sun is the least comfortable thing for everyone involved. For photography it creates stark contrast and deep shadows as opposed to the beautiful softness from late day sun. It can also irritate the eyes of wedding parties and guests if forced to face the wrong direction for the duration of a ceremony, sounds annoying huh? We totally get it if this is the only time that will work with all of your other events planned in the day but this is the evil and untold truth of midday (can you tell I’m not a big fan?)

If your ceremony will take place in this tough light, we suggest finding a pretty place in the shade that will create even lighting across the ceremony, or, at the very least, try to ensure that the light is behind the altar space.

The last hour prior to sunset creates the most beautiful light of the day that is often known as the “Golden Hour.” I often recommend leaving some flexibility in your timeline during this part of the day to ensure that we can sneak away for at least 15 minutes for portraits.  Also, the two of you can enjoy a bit of alone time during a beautiful moment of your wedding day. If you’re getting married in the summer in Calgary this can be a little tricky because the sun stays up so late so we usually are encouraging our couples to pop out of their reception for some gold hour shots.++

Rainy or Snowy Day Wedding Plan

We capture so many weddings in the mountains which means any weather any day. As an Aussie moving to Canada I had no idea just how finicky the weather is. The forecast would say +20 and sunny so I assumed that it would be +20 and sunny, right?! No, that’s not how the weather here works, it could be cloudy and only 10 degrees all morning, and then it could also pour with rain for about 15 mins at 2pm. You really do need to prepared for any weather any time of the year.  My recommendation to any brides eloping to the mountains is always bring something to keep you warm.

There are only a few balmy nights during the summer in Calgary and even more so in the mountains. Usually as soon as the sun dips behind the mountains in the summer there is a chill that hits the air that can cool you very quickly. It may add a little extra bulk to your luggage when you come but there are so many cute formal jackets that only enhance your wedding look, and they can come in VERY handy if you get cold easily.

The chance of rain (ahem, or snow!) in Calgary and the surrounding areas exists no matter what month or season it is, so embrace it. All vendors should have experience with rain at this point so you shouldn’t let it add stress. Have a backup ceremony plan just in case. And don’t be afraid of the rain or snow, it can make for some gorgeous photos … (sun snows are the most amazing!). Have some umbrellas on hand, just in case – those big, see through kinds are the best for photos, and then dance and sing in the rain and I will capture it all!

Wedding Venues

Often I’m asked, “Have you shot at our venue before?”

I’m going to be completely honest and tell you that it doesn’t matter.

Whether we’ve shot at a venue many times or the venue is brand new to us, we always do our homework and review the venue beforehand.  We have no desire to be caught off guard any more than you have a desire to have an inexperienced photographer.

I always make it a point to speak with the coordinator before the wedding as they can always provide helpful info on possible inaccessible areas. They can always let me know if there is any construction or change that may be on the horizon. Above that we always visit a venue before the wedding. I scout out where I think will be best for pictures, what areas are close and where the sun will be so we are completely familiar with the venue.
