When it comes to weather Chelsey + Chris’s intimate Kananaskis wedding was the craziest wedding we’ve ever photographed. When we moved to Calgary one of the things that we were told the most was “when it comes to weather .. expect anything, anytime” … this statement was never more true than on Chris and Chelsey’s June elopement when it was a white out blizzard. Yep, that’s right … June 10th and a white out – snow flakes the size of cotton balls – blizzard.
I met Chris and Chelsey in Kananaskis the week before the wedding so we could go over the schedule of the day and find some locations together to bridal portraits. At that stage it was scheduled to be a little chilly and raining. We had our fingers and toes crossed during the week hoping that the forecasted rain would change. Unfortunately as the week progressed the weather progressively got worse and worse.
Part of our contract terms is a day after session. It means that if the time we had scheduled for portraits on your wedding day is completely rained or snowed out and portraits aren’t a possibility then we will pick another day and do your portraits then. It’s really handy given the unpredictable weather we can get! This is the one and only time we have had to use it but I think Chelsey and Chris almost got the best of both worlds.
While it wasn’t the original plan, what Chelsey and Chris ended up getting was one of our most favourite set of images we have ever had from a wedding. Their ceremony a magical winter wonderland but we were also able to capture the originally planned pictures at our day after shoot. These two adventurous souls and their cute pooch Milly were amazing to hang out with, we were lucky enough to tramp around the mountains twice with these guys and we wouldn’t change the weather for anything!
Chelsey + Chris picked an unmarked location in Kananaskis for their ceremony.
They and their wedding party stayed at Mount Engadine Lodge, it is such a fantastic place to stay or for a Sunday drive and afternoon tea on the weekends. You can check it out here!
